In the wake of the arrest of some illegal miners recently, the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has sounded a note of warning to economic saboteurs, noting that Nigerian government would no longer tolerate any act of sabotage against its economy.
He made this known recently after the arrest of some eight China nationals in Plateau State for allegedly engaging in illegal mining.
According to him, his ministry was determined to check illegal mining that has become very rampant in some parts of Nigeria.
The minster decried the activities of the illegal miners, describing them as economic saboteurs. He also berated some local security operatives for aiding and abetting the villainous activities of the illegal miners in the area.
Speaking while inspecting the illegal mining site alongside with the National Security Adviser (NSA), Ali Monguno, he said that the arrested foreigners and other Nigerians involved would be taken to Abuja for further interrogation and prosecution.
The NSA had earlier ordered the arrest of the foreign illegal miners and 12 Nigerians at Kampani Zurak village in Bashar chiefdom of Wase Local Government Area of the state.
According to Fayemi “It is sad that security operatives are giving them (illegal miners) security cover. If not, why do people guard this site?
“These miners are illegal. Government did not give them permission to do this, they are economic saboteurs. This cannot happen anywhere else in the world and we will not allow it anywhere in Nigeria. We do not want these miners,” He stated.
In his address, Plateau state governor, Mr. Simon Lalong, said government would not hesitate to take appropriate punitive measure against any traditional ruler found to have connived with the miners to carry out the economic sabotage.
